Film or digital cameras?

In your opinion, are film cameras or digital cameras better?

If you can, please be as specific as possible, and give in-depth detail. humorus answers appreciated.
I just bought a Canon AE-1 Program 35mm film camera off of Ebay. I have already gone through 6 rolls of film in the past week. I am being offered a free digital camera. I dont know what kind of camera it is, but i know it is well taken care of by a family member. hope this clears some stuff up.!

As with many things in life….it depends.

If you want an original image that you could use to blackmail, say, a governor, then film gives you a valuable original. I can’t imagine anyone paying money for a memory chip from your camera, but they will give out lots of money for negatives and slides. Advantage: Film.

If you want to be able to e-mail lots of perfect, identical images, where each can serve as an original, digital cameras beat out film every time. Advantage: Digital.

Do you want instant feedback? Only digital can tell you if your cute girlfriend blinked when you took the shot. With film, you’ve got to wait an hour or more before the image can be developed. Put another way–you see a cute girl, take her photo with a digital, show it to her and she likes it and wants you to take more photos. Now compare that to film, “uh wait an hour and I’ll show you the images.” Yeah, she’s outta there. Advantage: Digital.

On the other hand, nothing can match the depth and saturation of a properly exposed color slide. There’s a 3-dimensional quality to the images. Advantage: Film.

Need to capture a wide dynamic range? Digital can’t do it, but print film can. Advantage: Film.

Hate reloading after 24 or 36 shots? Love taking photos into the hundreds or thousands on 1 card? Advantage: Digital.

Lose all 10,000 of your vacation photos because your memory card died? With film, not all of your eggs are in one basket. Advantage: Film.

You get the idea: Both digital and film have advantages and disadvantages. For ease, convenience and color accuracy, digital is the clear winner. However, for dynamic range, having a real original, and the need to have a true skill to take a photo, film can’t be beaten. With digital, people can expose via trial and error; with film, it takes real skill to get it right when you only have one chance to do it and no LCD screen to give you feedback.

That said, for a newbie, I recommend digital SLRs because instant feedback aids learning. Sure, I could make them use film cameras, but the connection between taking the photo and the consequences/results is tougher to make because development and printing is not instaneous. With digital, if I explain to someone about how changing the aperture affects depth of field, they can see the effect instantly on their images. With film, a student often can’t remember what they did on a shot, even with careful notetaking.

Hope this makes sense to y ou.
