what makes dslr cameras better than compact digital cameras?
i just ordered the nikon d3100 which i believe has about 14.1 mega pixels. my mom just got an olympus compact digital camera that has 14 megapixels, but the quality is horrible. i know that the d3100 is supposed to have great quality pictures, but they have basically the same amount of megapixels, so what makes it a better quality than the olympus?
p.s. for all i know megapixels mean nothing at all…i dont know much about cameras lol im just curious what makes them so different.
you should be talking about sensor size.
Before the days of digital sensors, there were film sizes. The digital sensors run on the same principal. The bigger the sensor the better the picture.
Imagine it like this. With any camera, from camera phone to 8×10 view cameras… the picture you take, will only be as large as the sensor or the piece of film. The smallest being the camera on a cellphone. No matter how many megapixles, your image is technically as big as the sensor in your cellphone, or compact camera, or dslr. or 35mm film. The larger this sensor is the easier it will be to blow up.

cell phone (about the size of a pin)
compact camera, (a few pins tied together with string) <-- like your mom's olympus
Micro 4/3's
APSC (like your Nikon 3100)
Full frame (35mm film or Nikon D3X)
Medium format (6cm by 6cm or 6cm by 7cm)
large format (4inch x 5 inch)
crazy large format (8inch x 10 inch)
Some have even larger formats.... ....
Even with all the technological advancement, the largest digital sensor is only 6cm by 6cm. It isn't nearly as big as it could be with film.
