What is the BEST digital compact on the market?

I am needing a little advice from you all.
What is the best digital compact camera on the market that is around or under £250 ($420)
I know my way around DSLR’s, however, i am needing a great image taker for backpacking and travel. And as you know lugging a great DSLR and lenses is a sucky effort when thousands of miles from home.
Image quality is paramount, it needs to be the best i can get for my money.
The G10 is out of my price range and i have been looking at the CANON Ixus 100 IS, however it is low on the zoom range in comparison to others. What are my options around this market?
What can u all recommend and are there any good websites for reviews and so on.

the Ixus is a fashion camera, and can’t be a match for the G10, you could try looking at the G9 or the G7. Also the older panasonic LX range is a good rival for the Canon G series.
I personally like the look of the Fujifilm F200EXR and F70EXR (soon to be released) they have really good sensors, which produce great dynamic range and good images at ISO1600.
But if you want manual controls and familiarity then DSLRs then the Canon G series is best for you.
