Does anyone else in Brooklyn, NY see that bright “star” in the sky?

For years, I’ve always seen an extremely bright “star” at night. When I look out my window, it’s usually towards the left, but 3 nights ago I noticed that it moved. Now when I look out my window, I look straight and it’s right there. It looks a lot larger and brighter now, too. It’s moved a few times over the years and always ends up back where it was (towards the left of my house). It doesn’t blink at all. It’s just a bright light. Almost like a car’s headlights sitting up in the sky. My grandmother said it’s probably a satellite which is probably the best explanation that I’ve heard. I’m really curious if anyone knows what this could be. Does the satellite in space let off a bright glow like that? Do stars move? I’ve tried taking pictures of it, but my digital camera doesn’t pick up anything in the dark that far away. Do you know any numbers that I can call to find out what this is? It’s not that important. It’s just my curiosity.

It’s definitely not a satellite, as they move across the sky in seconds or minutes.

It could be a planet (Venus is very bright and visible just now), though they slowly move about the sky so aren’t in the same place each year.

It could be a bright star – Sirius is the brightest (apart from the sun!), so maybe that’s what you’re seeing.

Certainly all the stars appear to move across the sky each night – that’s just the “celestial sphere” rotating, really just the earth rotating under the sky.

To say for sure what you’re seeing we’d need more information, but my guess is you’re seeing Venus, which is extremely bright in the south-west if you look out in the early evening.
