Digital Camera Reviews Affordable

what is a good digital SLR for a beginner?
since i am a beginner i don’t need something fancy and super expensive. I am mainly going to be using my camera to take pics of my life such as the places i visit, my family and friends, and etc. what is a good camera for an amateur that is also affordable? i would also like the lens to be included with the camera if possible….
AND ONE MORE THING!!!
i recently read a review on the nikon D40. it is really cheap for an SLR so that’s a bonus but people said its performance isn’t very good. But what i am thinking is that those reviews came from people that know a lot about cameras and have used many kinds and have a lot of experience with photography, not from beginners. i wouldn’t be able to tell if it is a really bad camera or the negative aspects of it… so should i purchase it??
I am a Nikon person. I have used Nikon since the 70s and the first Nikon SLR I ever bought still functions as well today as when I bought it.If you are goind digital SLR then right now Nikon is giving much better high ISO performance with low noise.
For people getting thier frist DSLR I usually recommend the D40. I have a Nikon D40 and I love it. The D40 has a full manual mode, Flexible progam, aperature priority, shutter priority modes. These are the same modes on all DSLR. It also has several other programed modes for things like portrait, night, children etc. As a photographer improves and learns to use metering better these additional modes seldom get used so they are usually found on the more amature cameras and seen as not needed on the professional cameras. I feel I have a fair amount of experience as a photographer and it performs well for me but I can give it to my 12 y/o grandson if set on program and he can get good usable pictures as well. His photography is improving as he is already learning to use many of the functions himself ( yes I’m a proud granpa) .
I also would not get caught up in the megapixel hype and instead look at the entire sensor issue. Look at the article I linked below The D40 will do everything a beginner to intermediate photographer needs at a great price. It comes with an 18-55 lens. It will let you use any other money to buy more accessories. And by the time you outgrow it cameras will have advanced to the point that most of what is on the market now would be obsolete. I bought a D300 last year and only had a it a few months when the D700 came out. The canon would also serve you well but I am a Nikon person so I suggest them. I have friends that are very happy with thier canon’s and take great photos. You will have others that like Pentax and Olympus and they are not bad cameras but if they were in the same ballpark you would see many more professional photographers use them
As to output on the D40 I have done sizes up to and including A3 with no problems and have talked to people that have done larger. Most of the people that have problems with enlarging are not shooting RAW and often have the file size set to small.
Some folks make a big deal about the lenses not autofocusing with older lenses. you really are not limited as from Nikon alone you have close to 30 lenses that will autofocus and It will function with lenses going back to the 50s though you don’t get all functions with AI lenses. If you buy an old lens m anually focusing is not hard we did it for decades and I use legacy glass on both my D40 and D300. And Nikon has done more to keep backwards compatability with lenses than any other company out there right now. Even to haveing a mode on the new full frame DSLR to let them use DX lenses ( true its at a cost of some megapixels ). For me the lack of a focus motor has never been an issue though I agree there are advantages to primes in many situations focusing them manualy is easy.
VR is a good thing and I like it particularly on longer lenses but its not a deal breaker on the range of the kit lens and learning some basics on properly holding the camera will more than compensate for the kit lens not having VR. Just for handheld keep the shutter speed faster than the inverse of the lens focal length and you’ll never miss it.. So on the kit lens shoot at 1/60 sec or faster handheld
Yes its only got 3 focus points the D300 can have 51 and I still usually keep it below 9 and use the EL when composing and autofocusing or I manually focus.
The D300 and its a wonderful camera but from the questions usually asked on this forum I have to wonder ( at the risk of being too blunt) how many beginners would read the 500 page manual and take the time to learn to use the extra functions on it. It really could be overwealming. My Nikon FM has far fewer controls and fiunctions to learn than even D40 and still it was a great camera that set the foundations for future growth,
