Day And Night Camcorders
Camcorders or similar urgent advice on brand and type?
I need a camcorder or similar that records straight at least 12, preferably 24 hours. It should be able to take night footage as well as day footage – I just want to set it up and turn it on.
Anyone have any suggestions on the brand to get – I do not care if it downloads to a computer, or has a card – I am desperate.
Sounds like you are trying to set up a surveillance camera. No one brand will stand out, just avoid the really cheap stuff. Garbage in garbage out.
Try to find a camera that uses infrared lights at night but auto switches to daylight. Some of the newer cameras have infrared LED’s attached.
For recording the video you need to consider quality. A vhs can record 8 hours straight and a pair of decks can record double. Setup the timer record function on the deck so that each deck records a separate time period. Daisy chain the decks together so they all receive the signal.
The system I described should be under $400. Recording to a hard drive or computer will increase cost and complexity but will improve quality. Additional equipment would be an analog/digital converter, a computer with firewire and a large hard drive. A DV SP signal is about 10.5 GB, so a 1TB drive would hold about 90 hours of footage. You would also need to buy software to capture the video signal.
