Cheap Canon Camcorders
what is the best camcorder for someone who wants to get into indie film making?
I am wanting to make low budget horror films, what is the best kind of camcorder that will give the ” theatre” type film to film with? I was looking at the Canon XL2 but it is pricey for me, is there any other camcorders out there that will do just about the same for a cheaper price
“Theatre” Type film is FILM which is exorbitantly expensive first for the camera, then for the film cans, then for the processing. The XL2 does digital videomaking, which you could use, any camera that uses mini DV will give you the same quality. If you want to be serious about it I’d recommend you either getting an HD camera (like the panasonic HVX which costs much more than the xl2 prosumer grade cameras are relatively inexpensive but I don’t think there’s a lot out in HD right now) or renting a camera. There should be some kind of business establishment near you that sells and rents camera equipment.
How much you want to spend is really dependent on what you intend to make your movies for. If you want to make something for youtube go ahead and buy whatever you can afford. If you want to make something for festivals or commercial production it would behoove you to spend the money on the higher end stuff.
