Cheap 3ccd Camcorders
Questions about prosumer camcorder and their CCD’s?
What are some of the things that separate the $5-10,000 camcorders from those that are $20-50,000?
Do most prosumer camcorders have 1/3 CCD’s? Or are there other sizes like 1/4 ect? I need to know because I have told that having 3CCD’s are important.
Is it better to have one large CCD or 3 smaller ones?
I saw a Panasonic with a 2/3 3CCD. Is this good? It was 20k though. How much better is 2/3 to 1/3? Is there a way I can get CCD’s this size for a cheaper price?
CCD’s are mainly for low light right?
Oh and do you know if the brand RED is any good? Specifically there cheaper models in the single thousands price range?
Can you tell me all the different sizes of the 3CCD’s?
I saw a cam for 10 thousand that I was thinking of getting with a 1/3 3CCD. However, I also saw a cam with 2/3 3CCD for only 5 thousand more. Would it be better to spend the extra money?
you want a camera with 3 CCDs. the size of the CCDs is given as the picture diagonal which can range from 1/8 th inch to 2/3 inch. The use of thirds was a carry-over from tube days and has nothing to do with the number of image pickups. The size of each CCD is not a big factor in the price of a camera, but the size of the CCD is a big factor in the price of the lens! For example the Canon Elura 100 has 3 CCDs with each being only 1/5 th inch. with such a small picture format the included lens is f=3.0 to 60 mm and comes as a freebie with the camera. The equivalent lens for a 2/3 inch format CCD would be f= 10 to 200 mm, with glass weighing 3 times that of the entire Elura camera, and priced 20 times more. pro lenses will run a thousand or two for the 1/3 inch CCD size and five to ten thousand for the 2/3 inch size. By necessity, prosumer palm size cameras must use the smaller CCDs to keep the lens size compact and light weight.
The use of 3 CCDs is not for low light, in fact the beam splitters lose light, so the dark performance of a single CCD is better. The 3 CCDs with beam splitters dedicate one CCD to each color range, Red, Green and Blue channels. This allows for vibrant and accurate color definition, even in brightly saturated subjects. Single CCD chips get overloaded and can bleach white in brilliant blue skylight. When CCD technology was new and expensive, some very nice professional cameras were made with 2 CCD design, and because broadcast television reduces color bandwidth, they were capable of the full color gamut. During this era, the single CCD was the only practical format for making a compact camera. That has all changed, with small CCDs, there is no reason to not select a 3 CCD design.
RED is made for theatrical production. Sony, JVC and Panasonic make broadcast television camcorders, some models cross-over to film making with 24p frame options, and have datarates of 100 mpbs. Canon and others make consumer camcorders with HD capability but the compression used is so severe (10 mbps) as to preclude theatrical use.
