canon digital cameras slrs
I need some advice on digital SLR cameras! If you are EDUCATED and know a lot about cameras please help :]?

Okay well my first camera is this great Canon Powershot SX110. I love it and all but I want to upgrade to something like a Canon EOS Rebel XS 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55IS Lens. I LOVE the Canon brand so I want to either stick with that or maybe switch to Nikon for the sake of money. I am not familiar with SLRs so I really need advice. Is a Rebel a good step up for me? I’m planning on using it for photography (I’m going to school for photography in January) and I need an SLR. I’m trying to find something affordable without compromising the performance of the camera or the look of my pictures. All educated advice is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Qualification. As my profile will tell you I spent a career in both television and still photography.

That said, I own and recommend the Rebel XS. It’s a great camera, easy to learn and use. The build is superb and so are the photos.

Never base any purchase of one of these devices on price – wrong approach. If you can’t afford what you want right now wait but don’t buy another device simply because it’s cheaper – that has always led do disappointment – bad idea.

Many photo class instructors prefer you use a film SLR. They do this so you learn the basics about full control of shutter, f/stop, ISO, etc.
I only mention this because unless you know that you can use a digital camera for your class you may want to look into that.

I have 3 digital cameras, two point and shoot by Fuji and my XS. The Canon is by far my favorite simply because of quality photos. However remember this, even the $35,000 Hasselblad is only as good as the person behind it. Sloppy technique can ruin the quality of even the best camera out there. I hope that to learn technique is why your going to school – that’s a good thing.

Want to discuss further feel free to email through my profile.

Good Luck, Jim

Canon 17-40mm f/4.0L USM AF Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

Canon 17-40mm f/4.0L USM AF Ultra Wide Zoom Lens

$779

Canon 8806A002 17-40mm F4.0 L USM AF EF Lens is a new and affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that’s ideal for both film and digital SLRs. Superior optics are assured by the use of three aspherical lens elements, in addition to a Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass element. Optical coatings are optimized for use with digital cameras. This lens focuses as close as 11 inches (0.28m), and offers both Canon’s full-time manual focus and a powerful ring-type USM for fast and silent AF. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. Finally, it offers weather-resistant construction similar to other high-end L-series lenses.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM Wide Angle Zoom Lens

$1099

This lens was designed for the Canon Digital Rebel, EOS Digital Rebel XT, EOS 30D and EOS 20D Digital SLRs, and will only work with these cameras. The Canon 1242B002 EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM offers image quality on a par with Canon’s highly regarded L-series lenses. It has a large maximum aperture which, combined with higher shutter speeds can minimize subject motion blur. Shallow depth-of-field separation of a subject from its background is much easier to achieve and the f/2.8 maximum aperture allows a bright finder and extremely precise focusing with f/2.8 compatible AF sensors. The internal stabilization has a sharpness benefit equivalent to a three-stop faster shutter speed, making this lens outstanding in low light situations. Smaller and lighter than lenses of similar specifications, the EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 27-88mm and is compatible only with the EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel XT and EOS Digital Rebel SLRs. ? 17-55mm Zoom Range Equivalent to 27-88mm in 35mm Format ? Ultrasonic (USM) motor for silent auto focusing operation and very quick focus even in low-light conditions ? Image Stabilization Technology ? Two Ultra-Low Dispersion UD Glass Lens Elements for excellent color rendition ? Three Aspherical Lens Elements to eliminate spherical aberration ? Optimized Lens Coating for Digital Cameras ? Compatible models: EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel XT, EOS

Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR CIRCULAR FISHEYE

Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR CIRCULAR FISHEYE

$899

This autofocus circular fisheye lens has an angle of view of 180 degrees in all directions. It is exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras with the APS-C size image sensor. When used in conjunction with digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors, it produces circular image within the frame. The F2.8 large aperture value produces a bright image in the viewfinder and allows photographers to take pictures in low light conditions, making it an ideal lens for Astrophotography and Aurora photography. Due to the quantifiable angle/area relationship it produces, this lens can be used for scientific and arts applications such as solid angle measurements of cloud distribution over the sky or vegetation distribution of the forest. The minimum focusing distance of 13.5cm/5.3inch and maximum magnification of 1:6 make it particularly useful for close-up photography. SLD(Special Low Dispersion)glass provides effective compensation of chromatic aberration. Sigma?s Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes flare and ghosting. It is equipped with an inner focusing system that creates high definition and good image quality over the whole frame. The HSM(Hyper Sonic Motor)ensures fast and quiet autofocusing and allows full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring.
