Is the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSI a good camera for professional photography?
My wife is wanting to get into photography (weddings, engagement, etc.), and we are trying to find a camera to start out with. Will the Canon Rebel XSI be a good enough camera to start out with? I know that she’ll need several lenses, but will the 12.2 MP camera be strong enough to perform?

This is for weddings where the bride and groom don’t want to pay thousands for a photographer, but still with a professional look and feel.
The XSi is a good camera and can deliver professional results from someone who knows how to use it. It is not however a professional camera. It would be a good backup camera for a pro wedding photographer though. It will do everything that a higher end model will do but there are reasons why a pro would not choose it as a first camera. The higher end models have much better build quality and are built for the constant use and abuse that a professional will put it through. The shutters on the higher end models will last much longer, it is quicker and easier to adjust the settings on them and they tend to perform better in low light situations. Something a wedding photographer almost always has to deal with. The other reason is that every Tom, Dick and Harry has a Rebel or equivalent camera. As a pro wedding photographer you need to project the image that you no what you are doing and have the proper equipment to do the job. You don’t want to look like an amateur.
At a minimum I would recommend the following equipment. Since you mentioned Canon here are the Canon cameras and lenses. Nikon also makes equivalent equipment.
Camera: Canon 50D $1,200. You can use an XSi as a backup. You need to have a backup. If your camera breaks during the wedding you need to be able to keep shooting.
Lenses:
Canon EF 24-70 F2.8L $1,200
Canon EF 70-200 F2.8L IS $1,700
Canon EF 50mm F1.4 $400
A wide angle like a Canon EF 17-40 F4L $700 would also be good to have for the large group shots or for a wide angle of the church or reception hall. A Canon 100mm F2.8 macro is also good to have for closeups of the flowers or cake.
Flash: Canon 580EXII $350 with flash bracket $100 and diffuser. I recommend the Gary Foing Lightsphere $50.
You will also need to have plenty of batteries and memory cards.
In addition to all of this you will need to have some kind of editing software. Adobe Photoshop CS4 $600 and or Adobe Lightroom 2 $200 are the standard. You also need to establish an account with a pro photo lab or invest in a very good quality printer.
It also should go without saying that you need to know how to use all of this stuff.
