HV40,
tape will give you a much better quality video. The HV40 is a fantastic little camera.
hard drive ans flash drive cameras have to use very high compression to get the video onto the storage media. That is where the problem is. Compression reduces quality, it makes the video hard to edit, requiring high end computers to make a enjoyable process, otherwise you are going to get stuttering, and audio/video seem out of sync.
Once the video is compressed you cannot recover the data that has been removed through the compression process.
Tape has a few other benefits
1 even if you damage the tape, (after using 100′s of tapes only damaged two, my fault) you can always recover the undamaged video. if your hard drive dies you have lost the lot, (more and more people complaining that the drives do not last, they do not like to be treated roughly, they will not record in they are subject to vibration, or high altitude.
2 Flash drive does not suffer the same way as HDD but if the drive dies then again you have lost the lot.
3 Tape makes a fantastic way to archive your videos. the tapes are cheap and if looked after will last for many years. far longer than the average DVD. We dont know about Blue ray yet, you have to use that as you cannot put hd video onto a dvd. your only other option is to use a HDD, but again they are classed as an unreliable device. Most hard drives are ok for around 5-7 years, some do last longer but you are on borrowed time.
I have used Tape for many years, nothing around the same budget will give you the quality.
