Canon HG20 compatible with mic?
Hey, Im looking to buy this camera.
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-vixia-hg20/4505-6500_7-33196959.html
Does anyone know if this particular camera is compatible with a mic of any kind?
Sure… The Canon HG20 is a hard disc drive based, AVCHD compressing, MTS file producing consumer grade camcorder. It – as with ALL consumer grade hard disc drive camcorders – has known problems with vibration and altitude which can prevent them from recording audio. Most low-end video editors cannot deal with MTS files, the software that comes in the box with the camcorder is essentially useless – and the process flow for hard disc drive and flash memory camcorders is poorly defined. For instance, where are you planning to store the video that you might not use for the current project – but may want to use for a project in 2 or 4 or 10 years?
But I digress…
Read the camcorder’s manual:
http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/video/VIXIA_HG21_HG20_Manual.pdf
See page 17 for the location of the 1/8″ (3.5mm) stereo external audio-in jack (item 9).
See page 18 for the location of the “mini advanced shoe” that can use only certain Canon manufacturer mics with the “mini advanced shoe” connectors.
See pages 55 and 56 for additional details using the mics with either the “mini advanced shoe” or the 1/8″ (3.5mm) stereo mic jack.
See page 129 for specific power/output/resistance requirements when using an external mic with the 1/8″ (3.5mm) stereo mic jack.
Audio Technica (ATR55, PRO24-CM), RODE (Stereo mic) and NRG Research (SA-568 shotgun switchable or SA-800 stereo condenser) make decent, affordable external mics with 1/8″ (3.5mm) plugs.
If you choose to use XLR connector based mics, it is suggested that a XLR adapter like those from juicedLink (CX-231) or BeachTek (DXA-6A) be used.
Personally, I would STRONGLY suggest skipping any HDD based camcorder – the HV40 is recommended but your computer requires a firewire port – if this is not possible, then any from the Canon HF or HF S series are suggested.
