Can some people out there list some Digital Cinema Camcorders and the prices please and could you tell me is the Canon DM-XL2 3CCD Mini DV Camcorder a Digital Cinema Camcorder? Thank You!!! As I’m looking to make a few short films!!!
Until I read your question, I had not heard the term, “Digital Cinema Camcorders”.
If you are looking for a camcorder that will perform well in low light (because it has large lenses and imaging chips compared to consumer camcorders) and have various manual controls (zoom, focus, aperture/iris, audio gain, white balance, zebra, neutral density filter access, among others) on the outside of the camcorder, then you have lots of options…
In the last few years, RED (One or Scarlet) have become the choice for the high end users… Along with Silicon Imaging.
The miniDV tape based Canon XL2 to which you refer is a great camcorder – but when compare to others that can also capture in high definition, the standard definition limitation of the XL2 is a bit disappointing. DOn’t get me wrong – it is a pro-grade camcoder – but it has been replaced by the Canon XLH seires which can capture in both high definition and standard definition video resolutions.
If the XL2 represents your budget range – and assuming you have separate budgets for mics, lights, tripod and other steadying equipment, cases, power supplies (like optional rechargeable batteries), and lots of other gear… and assuming you are looking at a new XL2 with a MSRP of about US$4,000, then you should also consider the prosumer Sony HDR-FX1000 (used to “film” Paranormal Activity). You will also want to investigate an XLR adapter (juicedLink or BeachTek) for it. The Sony HVR-Z5, Canon XHA1 and JVC GY-HM100 round out this price range. The Panasonic AG-HVX200 is a little more – but alos a good camcoder.
All can be part of the system of equipment used to capture video and audio suitable for “short film” designation.
This assumes you are able to capture compelling content and have the ability to edit that captured video (hardware, software and skill) to provide an interesting viewing experience.
