Camcorders With Hard Drives
What is the best format for camcorders?
I can’t seem to figure out what’s the best media format to record video on with a camcorder. I hear Mini DV tapes are the best because of less compression, but if you record 6 hours of footage, it’ll take you 6 hours to transfer it to your computer.
And Flash and Hard Drives use serious compression and that makes the image more pixelated and soft.
What is the best of these three formats to record video on?
Best format for consumer camcorders?
MiniDV tape, DV and HDV format. If you need hard drive based, then get an external hard drive that records to DV/HDV – not the internal hard drives with very highly compressed MPEG2 or AVCHD – Check Focus Enhancements’ FireStore. If you need flash memory, then get a camcorder that records DV/HDV to the flash meomory (like the Panasonic HDX200) – not the flash memory using very highly compressed MPEG2 or AVCHD.
It is true – if you record 6 hours of video and want to transfer all 6 hours, standard definition will take 6 hours… High definition, even longer. I don’t see what the problem is with that – I use the import time to design the DVD menuing artwork, DVD background, mow the lawn – there is no need to sit and stare at it… like with the HDD or flash cams when you copy, step 1 after that is to make the archive/backups… so burning discs. Very time consuming. At least I can multi-task when the tape is importing.
Check what the big boys use… Sony HVR series. Canon XH and XLH series. JVC GY series… DV/HDV is good enough for them – it is good enough for me.
