Camcorders With Flash Drive

Differences in camcorder?
I am looking to buy a camcorder. I was looking at a JVC (which was the brand of my old tape one) with 60GB.
I was just wondering if someone could help explain to me the differences of camcorders. I know that Flash drive isn’t something that I want, but I was looking into the mini DVDs. Are they a good idea? How do you play them? Like a regualr dvd?
Will it work on blueray?
Would it be better to get a mini dvd or a 60 gb??
Is there any particular type or brand that you would suggest?
Stay very far away from consumer DVD based camcorders. No one should ever waste their money on them. They were a good idea that was poorly implemented. Do not bother with them.
How do you know that flash memory is not what you want? I would take that over a hard disc drive camcorder – all other things being equal. Hard disc drive camcorders have problems with high altitude and high levels or prolonged vibration – they won’t record to the hard disc – that flash memory or miniDV tape based camcorder do not have. The file formats on most hard disc drive and flash memory camcorders is the same.
If the hard disc drive camcorder is broken, how do you plan to get the video out? With miniDV tape or flash memory, just take the tape or memory card out and use a different, similar camcorder. That said, where consumer camcorders are concerned, I would take a miniDV tape based camcorder as a first choice (like the Canon HV30 or HV40), then next choice would be flash memory (like the Canon HF or HF S series).
Before you go to far down the path (in no particular order other than my stream of conciousness):
1) Set a budget.
2) Understand what camcorders fit that budget.
3) Understand what you want to do – will there be editing? Will you want to upload (so there is a need to connect to your computer)?
4) What are you expecting to capture to video?
5) Who will be the audience to watch the video you capture?
6) How long into the future does the video need to be available? Have you thought about how you plan to archive or store the video you capture?
7) Do you need an external mic?
Are you planning to capture video at places where the audio is REALLY loud?
There’s more, but this is a good start. Once you think through these, then we can help with the purchase decision.
