camcorder – hard drive vs. flash drive but HD?
Which is better, a camcorder with an 80GB hard drive or one that uses memory cards but is in HD? I am going on vacation next summer and want something with high quality videos but I don’t want to carry around tens of memory cards that I could lose.
I tried a Panasonic 80GB camcorder but the quality isn’t the best – pixelized and blurry. I tried a Sony 80GB camcorder just to compare brands and the quality of this one is a lot better in video, but a lot worse in photo (again, though, photos don’t matter).
Are the HD camcorders really that great of quality that they are worth lugging around memory cards for?

The image quality you saw is not a measurement of whether the cam is a hard disk drive cam (HDD) or one that records to memory cards. The Playback of the video is best checked by connecting a high definition (HD) cam to a HDTV via the A/V cable (or HDMI if the cam has such a port) and viewing it that way. It’s not uncommon for HD video to look less than ideal on a computer monitor, for various reasons. There is a convenience and safety issue when using a HDD camcorder or one that uses memory cards. HDD cams are subject to failure should you drop or abruptly jolt the camera. The hard drive is like you have in your computer. Storing a lot of your precious video on the disk drive is not safe. If something were to happen, like I mentioned, or the cam was lost or stolen, you would lose all your video (in the camera). But using a few memory cards is lot safer and more convenient. You can use a simple card reader to access the videos verses always having to connect your cam to a computer. I like using many cards as I can switch them out as I work on various projects. If you still hesitate to use cards, at least choose a dual-flash camcorder (one that records to internal flash memory and can use cards too). Don’t forget an extra battery(s) for your trip, and have the appropriate A/C charging adapter plug if you are using in a country outside the US.
