How to import MiniDV video from tape to PC or MAC without the original camcorder?
I have a mac, blu ray burner and necessary software (FCE, iMovie, Toast 10 Pro), and I have been using them to produce DVDs or Blu Rays movies. My friends want me to help them do the same, but their videos are on MiniDV tapes (mine is on memory chips). It just occurred to me, that they have to also give me their camcorders, in addition to the tapes. Isn’t that backward? Is there any way (hardware and software) to transfer video content from MiniDV to computers without asking them to give me their camcorders also?

you have to use their cameras, for two reasons,
1 you have to read the tape somehow! can only be done with a player, Its not backward at all what about hard drive cameras, you need to have the camera or an external hard drive to put the video on.
2 depending on how they recorded the video, if they by chance used long play then you will need the same camera, to play it back as the LP speed is not a standard speed. if there is no Lp then you can use just one camera.
As a thought does either of your computer have Firewire, you will need it to get the video off the cameras,
99% of editing software will handle video from mini-dv so that’s not an issue.
so without firewire no software is going to get the video off, only use that process, do not get a device that will convert video from firewire to USB they do not work.
