Camcorders Top Picks
Flip Camcorders? HELP!?
I help out with the local high schools marching band. I record their performance from the top of the bleachers for memories, and to help fix mistakes. I am interested in the flip cameras either the minohd, or the ultrahd. I am unsure if they will be able to have nice quality from a distance, and if they will be able to pick up the bands sound. Please let me know! If you have any other suggestions for a camcorder the MOST I want to pay is $300. But the cheaper the better! Also, I have a mac, but I have access to a pc if a great camcorder is not compatible with a mac.

Pocket camcorders, like the Flips use fixed focus lenses and offer around 2X digital zoom. Digital zoom is basically magnifying the pixels and is not true lens optics. Also pocket cams don’t record quality audio because they use tiny mono mics. You won’t be pleased with the results with what you’ll be using it for.
If you could add to your budget, you could get something that has 10X or more optical zoom lens, a tripod threaded base and use a tripod or mono-pod, and maybe an external mic jack for a quality shotgun microphone. A shotgun mic will have a more directional pickup pattern. That way you don’t pick up so much obedient noise around you. With a better cam, you’ll be able to record good video from the grand stands and with decent audio.
