What is the best quality capture format for HD Camcorders?
Hard Drive? SD Card? DV Tape?
Please give as much detail as you would like, but please answer only in terms of QUALITY OF VIDEO. I don’t care about price, conveniences, or any other factors.
Data rate is the measure of quality. Tape has the highest data rate, 25 mbps, and HDV is MPEG2 encoded, same as television HDTV. JVC was making some Everio models with 30 mbps MPEG2 on HDD, but no more.
Most of the better HDD and memory card HD uses AVCHD, which has a data rate of only 12 mbps, unless you get the latest version which is 24 mbps and thus “near” HDV quality.
And last is the MPEG4 encoded HD which is strictly youtube/internet grade.
