How can I create a larger video display screen for instant playback while using a digital camcorder?
Are there any digital camcorders that allow a direct wire connection with certain portable DVD players so a 7″ to 9″ video display would be available to immediately view video recordings made on the camcorder? If so, what would be the least expensive units on the retail market with these features? What other methods could be used to produce an instant enlarged video replay from a digital camcorder without the necessity of creating a recorded DVD or CD and/or carrying around a laptop PC or DVD recorder or television. This supplemental equipment would not only be expensive but inconvenient as well.
ANY camcorder with an AV-out connection (I’m 99.999% certain that is ALL camcorders) can connect to a monitor. I regularly use a Sony DVP-FX810 LCD portable DVD player (I think it was $180 last year) that has AV-in capabilities so I can use the bigger screen instead of the smaller viewfinder or built-in display. The battery lasts for 5+ hours when watching DVDs – longer when it is a monitor only. When I use a camera crane, this is the ONLY way I can see what the camcorder sees – so I know where to point the camera with the camera crane or pan/tilt controls on the camera crane or the zoom and focus controls on the wired LANC remote.
Not only can this particular Sony portable DVD player do AV-in to monitor what the camcorder sees live, it can also be used as the playback monitor immediately following the scene capture to be sure the scene was shot correctly – or we need to shoot it again… There are also smaller monitors available and specifically for camera-mounting for the same reasons… Or you can always connect your camcorder to any TV for immediate playback or monitoring the same way. Using a 52″ plasma would be awesome.
Go to bhphotovideo and do a search using “camera mountable LCD monitor”… is that what you’re talking about? Or you can check the DVP-FX820 8-Inch Portable DVD – it has AV-in – just connect to the AV-out of the camcorder. You will need 3 female-female RCA adapters to connect the cables.
