Camcorders Low Light
Letter-boxed SD on a Hi-def TV…?
I asked a question a little while ago about camcorders for shooting weddings where the light is often low. What I’ve learned is that some of the best low-light cams are older 3CCD SD models, not the newer HD ones. My question is, would 16:9 (by letterboxing) SD video from a higher-end camera like a PD170 or VX2100 be good enough for most people? Would the difference be that stark? I’m amazed when I walk into people’s houses and find them watching an SD show or DVD on an HDTV without adjusting the aspect to 4:3. The stretched-out picture doesn’t bother them at all! Maybe people aren’t that picky?
partly it is lazy. partly is because some HD displays will be damaged if shuttered (shutter is the term when the sides of the picture are dark as opposed to letter box which referes to the top/bottom) for long periods of time. partly because many people prefer that the entire display be filled but don’t want to use the zoom function as that can cut heads off or subtitles. and partly because they want to be obnoxious in showing off the WideScreen feature of the new tv set.
FYI, sd shows on camcorders, TV and DVD movies can be anamorphic and are properly displayed at 16:9 thank you. yes you can get miniDV camcorders that are anamorphic (as opposed to letterboxed) and they will intercut nicely with true HD footage if your editor can handle multi-format sources.
