fisheye lens question for camcorders?
ok i’ve been reading up on fisheyes and i want to spend less then $75 so i know to get the add on attachment lens and not the actual fisheye lens that are hundreds of dollars… but what i can’t seem to find on the internet is what type of fisheye does what… what i mean is, i want one that isnt too “fisheye-ie” i want just a little fisheye effect so does that mean going close to .50mm or closer to .10 mm….?
To start with, “fisheye-ie” (good word!) and the opposite “zoom-ie” (if you don’t mind my borrowing your construct) are on a continuum.
If 1.0x (not mm – more on this later) = normal view and this is the middle of the “continuum”
and
a “tele lens” that is 2.0x increases the size of the image
and
Zoom of 10.0x or 12.0x 0r 20.0x increase
then…
when you go smaller than 1x, the wide-angle field of vision changes and gets more distorted as the multiplier gets smaller than 1…
So, in your example:
0.7x is basically a wide angle lens with a little distortion.
0.5x will have a wider angle of view and more distortion
0.3x will have an even wider angle of view and distortion will be pretty severe.
“mm” (millimeter) in camera/camcorder optics is typically used to measure lens diameter – bigger number (wider diameter of the lens) is typically better. For example, my Sony HDR-HC1 has a 37mm filter diameter lens “system”. It has a built-in optical zoom of 12x and I can mount a screw-on 2x tele lens to increase that 12x zoom to 24x. Or, instead of the 2x tele lens, I can mount a screw-on 0.7x wide-angle lens so I can see more of the area being captured to video – very useful in a small room… The 2x tele lens and 0.7x wide angle lens are made to screw-mount the 37mm filter diameter threads of the camcorder’s built-in lens mechanism.
