Is it cheaper to buy camcorders in Japan?
I went to Tokyo once and saw the same model of camcorder which I had purchased in Australia which cost me approx $2,700 Australian Dollars, I worked it out to be approx $500 Australian in Japan. I don’t know if I read the price wrong, also I was unsure of the voltage and the colour system. So what I want to know are cameras much cheaper in Japan, as I didn’t spend much time comparing camera prices.
No, I don’t think so. The standard of living in Japan is quite high, so everything is priced accordingly. For example, right before I returned to the US from Japan, I bought a nice Canon camera for my mother. I bought it at Yoshimura’s Camera Villiage in Osaka, one of the cheapest places in Japan to buy cameras. It costed me 48,000yen (about $480US). Shortly after that, I saw the same camera on sale in the US for $280US.
In your case, voltage is a major concern since Australia uses 240V, where Japan uses 100V at 50Hz in the Kansai area and 60Hz in the Kanto area.
