Camcorders How They Work

How to have Quality Audio in my Videos?
Hi Friend,
I’ve been recording a few videos and uploaded it to YouTube about some of the things I wanted to share to the world. I noticed though, that the audio quality of my recording is not that good. I’m using a camcorder which has really good video, and I’ve done a bit of research and I found out that most camcorders don’t really have high-quality audio recording unit.
I’ve also read that I might need to use an external mic like a lavalier/lapel to better capture my audio. I wonder though how to make this work together with my camcorder. I mean is, how to combine the audio recording to the video so that they come accross naturally.
Basically, what I’m asking is if you know of any good information or resource that I could read that clearly shows me how to setup this whole thing of recording quality video and audio at the same time (what devices I need to have and how to set them up).
Thanks much.
Sincerely,
Fernan
Your camcorder should record very acceptable audio. The 2 biggest issues are the distance from the mic to the audio and the automatic gain control that most camcorders use.
If you use an external mic and get it close to the audio source you can get a big improvement right there. This reduces the signal to noise ratio and you hear better audio.
If you can shut off the automatic gain or level control this will also help. The automatic control boosts the audio gain to get a certain sound level. Whenever the audio you want to record has even a small pause in it the automatic circuit boosts the gain way up trying to record something. If you pay attention you can notice the background noise appearing in pauses when you play back a recording. By using a manual gain control you eliminate this problem.
These 2 steps will make the most difference in your audio. There are sources for wireless mics below. You can use a regular mic if you have an announcer type situation or a lavalier style mic if you don’t want it to be obvious.
