What is the best camcorder for Windows Movie Maker?
I have an HP dv6910us with Windows Vista home premium and the new version of Windows Movie Maker. I have a Canon FS100 now, but my WMM can’t detect it. Could you give me examples of the best camcorders that are compatible to the WMM I have. I would preferably like a high def. camcorder.
*Please don’t give me suggestions of camcorders that will PROBABLY work, please give me suggestions of camcorders that will DEFINITELY work.
Your FS100 is fine and definitely will work – you just aren’t using the right steps. MovieMaker won’t detect the FS100. That is not the process flow for Flash Memory or Hard disc drive camcorders.
The operating system should – and you mount the flash memory like any other USB connected mass storage memory item… then look in “My Computer” and open the camcorder. You will see the file structure. Look for the .MOD files. Copy those to your computer.
You need to convert those files to something WMM can deal with… like WMV… I like MPEG StreamClip.

After the conversion is done, quit MPEG StreamClip, launch MovieMaker and drag the converted files to the MovieMaker Collections area.
You only other option is to use a miniDV tape based camcorders, but your computer must have a firewire port – since you did not tell us which camcorder, we don’t know if it has one, needs one installed or even can support one.
Snowwillow’s suggestion to use HandBrake is good, too – though I usually use that for ripping DVDs.
