Camcorders And Accessories
I have to start a video-journalism department on $3,500…?
I’m heading up a new video-journalism department for next year. I already have one apple laptop and one mini-dv camcorder with the essential accessories (tripod, mono pod, tapes, bag, cords, batteries etc.). Now I have $3,500 to buy:
- 1 apple desktop
- 2 camcorders (one hard drive and one SD, preferably)
- 1 scanner (mac compatible and not scanner/printer combo)
- 2-3 P&S cameras (rechargeable battery included, preferably)
- memory cards
Any suggestions as to what I should buy? I’ll take any input in any category if you can’t answer all of it. Thank You!

If it was me, this is what I would buy as a filmmaker.
An Imac w/ Final cut pro (check the system requirements before you actually buy the imac so you can know which one you need. (Get someone you know thats in college that way you could use their education discount.)
A really good camcorder right now is the Canon hv30 (hv40 coming in about a month). Its around $600, and it shoots mini dv in HD, and in 24p, 30p, and 60i. You can get an xlr adapter and add professional mics to it. Its a small cam but produces stunning images.
For the point and shoot, I suggest checking cnet for reviews. Also check on amazon.com or bhphotovideo.com for their reviews also.
