Best Tape Camcorders
What are the best prosumer camcorders at entry level price using SD or digital cards instead of MiniDV please?
I am not shooting drama, rather travel/hotel videos, and prefer the ease/speed of shooting directly to digital cards, instead of tape.
My definition of “Prosumer”:
Lenses larger than 43mm diameter.
Manual controls for zoom, focus, aperture are on the outside of the camcorder and easy to get to. No “shared focus/zoom ring.
Manual audio control – not just a “Normal” or Low” mic gain switch.
Audio-in jack – likely 1/8″ stereo.
Captures DV or HDV format video.
The other posters are correct… There are no Prosumer camcorders that use SD or digital cards for recording DV or HDV format video.
The Panasonic HVX200 uses P2 cards. With its XLR audio-in and slew of other manual controls, it is in the Pro camp.
Most prosumer and pro camcorders use DV or HDV file formats – and that generally means miniDV tape… or external hard drives connected via firewire to miniDV tape (see Focus Enhancements’ FireStore)… or DVDPRO/DVCPRHD or HDCAM/DVCAM. A couple of Panasonic pro AVCAM series write to hard drive – have not seen any pros using them.
No SD memory prosumer or pro camcorders… of which I am aware.
