Which camcorders are better? Mini dv or dvd?
I’ve read a couple of reviews that say dvd-based camcorders are best.
What makes a good camcorder is depenent on many factors, these include:
Lens
Sensor (Image)
DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
Recording Device
Thats the order in which all camcorders are designed, now there is a lot of variables to consider, so there is now black and white answer, however what can be said is that the TOTAL of a camera IS the sum of its part, therefore, the weakest part of the system will be the cameras bottleneck in terms of quality and performance.
With DVD recorders, you are using a highly compressed format to record video material on (not so great for video editing), all MiniDV records at a data rate of 25Mbit/sec, with DVD recorders, THE maximum is 9Mbits/sec, usually it would be around 4Mbits/Sec. This means that the video has to be really compressed.
It is always a good idea to capture video at the highest quality possible, THEN you can compress later, this way you will always maintain the highest quality possible.
So to answer your question, If I did not factor in all the other parts of the camcorder and just looked at the recording device, then clearly the MiniDV format would be a more superior choice (teqhically speaking, higher bandwidth)
