Best Hi8 Camcorders
Is it still possible to find a Hi8 camcorder that’s sold in (non-online) stores?
I need a camcorder so I can transfer some of my old 8mm video cassettes onto my computer but I don’t have a hi8 camcorder anymore. Do any of you know if they still sell these camcorders in stores like best buy or any typical electronic store? Where can I find something decent? And also what conversion device would any of you recommend (to transfer from camcorder to pc)?

The Hi8 format isn’t current technology anymore, having been replaced by Digital8 (same 8mm cassette) and then by miniDV (6.35mm tape cassette). You can still buy Sony’s Digital8 Video Walkman VCRs (the GV-D200 and the GV-D800) new from online dealers, and occasionally Sony has offered refurbished GV-200′s for $200 from their SonyStyle online store, but they are now out-of-stock. (The GV-D800 is the same deck, just with a built-in LCD screen.)
The Digital8 VCRs will playback Video8 and Hi8 tapes, or you can shop around for a new-in-box/refurb deal for a Digital8 or Hi8 camcorder from various online dealers who specialize in closeouts and discontinued items. If you stick with the Digital8 models, it will automatically digitize the analog Hi8 video and PCM audio of your tapes into DV (FireWire interface) for transferring to your computer. With just a Hi8 camcorder or VCR, you’d still need a video capture device to get the signals into your computer, and most of the under-$100 gadgets do a poor job compared to DV.
You can do a Yahoo!Search or Google those two Video Walkman models (they’re also on eBay all the time) or just use “Hi8 VCR” or “Digital8 VCR” as keywords to look for other available brands.
