Best Camcorders Budget

How do I know what Camcorder for the price to choose?
My husband and I are expecting our first child and want to purchase a camcorder. We are on a budget, but want to get the best for our money. How do I know what I am getting is reliable? I have checked reviews, but they are not always helpful. I am not a techie, but am not computer challenged either. Just don’t know much about the camcorders of today. The last one I owned was a VHS camcorder if that tells you anything.
