720p Vs 1080p Camcorders
Flip Mino HD vs PD – 170 (in terms of professional filming)?
These days i’ve been seeing so many amateur films being made on Flip mino HD and some other digital camcorders which give a very crispy result in 720p and even 1080p.. I’ve been a film student and for our projects we’re told to work on a PD-170.. I personally don’t like the result it gives. It’s not crispy at all.. besides keeping a track of DV tapes is a pain and then going to grab it and stuff takes alot of time.. So i wanted to know what would the most closest digital alternative to a PD-170 when it comes to quality and professional look..
Thanks
The PD170 is a totally superior video system than the flip. First the PD has a real lens, you know, one that has focus and servo zoom, where the flip has a fixed one that does neither. The PD has 3 CCD imagers for accurate color capture even in difficult lighting situations. Color separation in the flip is with stripe filters on a single CCD. The CCD size on the PD is 4 times larger.
Audio recording on the PD is 16 bit 48 khz sampled uncompressed digital stereo. The PD can use external mics for better pickup of both narration and music. For serious music video work, the PD shoots in DVCam format where the audio samples are locked to the same clock as the video so the video/audio sync does not get displaced when editing.
Speaking of editing, the PD uses the DV system so that any and every frame can be used as an edit point. The flip uses GOF (group of frames) so that editing is only possible once every 8 frames!!
I have used both miniDV and DVCam and if you are not getting crisp video, then someone just forgot to focus!! gosh its dangerous to use a video system where it is so easy to see the mistakes of the operator. Because of GOF, the flip cannot follow action or camera movement without blur, its a great camera for watching paint dry though.
you are very lucky to get a PD170 to work with for your classes. this will give you a hands on experience with how real video is created. The PD170 is 100 percent digital, duh. the next step up from DVCam would be HDV which retains many of the advantages of tape but with an HD format. HDV is very close to broadcast television HDTV encoding.
