24p Cinema Mode Camcorders
24p? Sony Vegas?
Hello everyone, I’ve had experince with standard definition camcorders for my entire life, but recently recieved the Canon HG-10 as a Christmas present. I have NO idea how to take advantage of all this new technology! I really want to achieve a cinema look with my Sony Vegas Pro 8 software. Can someone help me because my camera has a 24p mode and I don’t know where to start. From what I’ve read I need to do a pull-down? I need help though, sorry for the inconvience, and thanks for any help.
Unless you intend to transfer your footage to film, you shouldn’t need to worry about doing a 3:2 pulldown (along with waiting for it to render). Footage shot in 24p will look the same no matter what format you edit in. I own the HV20 and have also shot and edited with the AG-DVX100.
Many people use the pulldown to help make video that was shot interlaced to show a more film-like motion. I will admit that shooting in 24p gets you much closer to the film look than anything else that video technology has to offer, IMO. In actuality, I got better results shooting in 30p, but neither the HV20 or HG-10 offer it.
Some people are purists and just have to keep the 24f cadence throughout the entire process of editing before finally outputting to the same format it’s going to wind up in anyways. If you choose this path (prepare for long rendering times), you WILL have to perform the pulldown since the HG-10 will not output 24p.
But like I said earlier (and you will notice, especially when you compare 24p next to 60i), the appearance of footage shot in 24p doesn’t change when converted to 60i, just as the look of a movie shot on film doesn’t change when it’s converted to video.
