24 Frame Camcorders
What’s the point and all the fuss about 24p video recording in prosumer camcorders?
I don’t get this either! Totally clueless what effect 24p supporters are talking about… I know the difference between 60p and 30p and if anything, panning is super hard with 30p, otherwise it looks “different” more than actually “better”. To get the FPS down to 24 makes me wonder – wouldn’t the image stutter too much? Since when is less frames per second better? If so, how about 15fps…? I’ve been to movie theaters… The picture there looks nice and smooth (and it’s supposedly 24p, right?) – so what’s the fuss about that 24p which would essentially make the image… not-smooth?? If I’m totally mistaken here, someone please explain as I really do not get it…
24 fps looks smooth in the modern theater because it is double shuttered on projection making it effectively 48 fps. when projected at 24 fps there is a lot of flicker, which is why movies are called “flicks”.
Video standards were developed in the CRT era which explains some of differences. NTSC and PAL use interlaced fields, since the light decay of the phosphors is less than a frame, the 60 Hz refresh prevents flicker, improves brightness and doubles the resolution. This allows TV to be watched in a lit room, whereas movies must be projected in the dark. The use of fields makes portrayal of moving subjects more smooth and accurate. With video games and some camcorders working at 30p, instead of interlace, some LCD TVs compensate by increasing the refresh to 60Hz or more to prevent flicker. The modern LCD monitor can work well at any frame rate including 18 fps Super8 movies you sometimes see on YouTube.
